Do you know how much St. Mary’s helps Northern AZ?

St Mary’s food bank serves 250,000 meals everyday across Arizona and parts of California. But to understand how far St. Mary’s has come, first you need to understand where they came from.
In 1967 a man named John Van Hengel noticed that grocery stores disposed of food that had damaged packaging or was near expiration. Armed with this knowledge, Van Hengel met with grocery store managers across the valley, persuading them to donate edible but unsalable food to St. Vincent De Paul. Soon van Hengel was receiving more food than one dining room could use.
“The poor we shall always have with us but why the hungry?”- John Van Hengel
After establishing the first “food bank” Hengel collected and distributed more than 250,000 pounds of food to 36 local agencies.
Last year St. Mary’s distributed 4,282,680 pounds of food just in Northern Arizona from January 2015 to April 2015. That’s just Northern Arizona!
St Mary’s helps out 9 agencies just here in Flagstaff Arizona. They help Flagstaff Family, Sunshine Rescue/ Hope Cottage, YCWA, Big Brothers Big Sisters, Northland Family, Sharon Manor, Think Jesus, Coconino County Senior Center and Coconino County Office.
You are probably wondering how does St. Mary’s help out so many people. St. Mary’s gets about 85% of its donations from grassroots donations. St. Mary’s has amazed me by how much the common person donates to their cause. What impressed me the most was that 95-96% of a dollar goes to feeding people. St Mary’s truly believes in helping other people and we are proud to support them.
I love how involved St Mary’s is in our local Flagstaff community. They also support summer meal programs for kids at the YMCA and the Boys and Girls Club as well as the emergency food boxes.
We have been sponsoring the You’ve been Served fundraiser for 2 years now. The You’ve Been Served is put on by our local legal community of Flagstaff and benefits St. Mary’s Food Bank.
We want to thank St. Mary’s Food Bank for all that they do for our local Flagstaff community.

Silent Salesmen Free Car Wash

Here at Findlay Toyota Flagstaff we are always thinking how can we make the guest experience better?
We noticed that our guest were window shopping our inventory on Sundays. We thought to ourselves what if we took the pressure off and let our guest window shop by looking at vehicles on our lot with no salesmen in sight.
It’s simple for our Silent Salesmen. You see a vehicle that you like, you make an offer in our silent salesmen slot drop off box and we contact you back on Monday.
When looking at your future new car why not get a free car wash when you are at our location. Maybe you just finished an errand at Home Depot or at Petco. You look at your vehicle and think to yourself, I really should wash my car.
Sometimes you are too busy during the weekdays with work, school, kids or meetings and just haven’t found time to clean your car. Our Silent Salesmen Sunday car wash is perfect for the busy body person. You pull up into our service drive, one of our team members will greet you and take your car through the car wash.
After we hand dry your car to remove water spots, you are free to browse our inventory and see if you like anything. If free time isn’t one of your attributes during the weekdays then the Sunday Free Car Wash is perfect for you. It’s quick, free and did I mention free.

Toyota’s youth job programs

The Findlay Auto Group employees many Flagstaff residents and helps our local economy. The Findlay Auto Group created a partnership with Goodwill jobs connection and helps employee teenagers so they can build resume and get ready for the new world. Having teenagers build communication skills, learn discipline and build their resume are key for the new work force that is constantly evolving.
We take kids ages 14-19 and give them part time hours so they can learn how the real work force works. Not just pulling weeds or working for a relative. Having a job history is an ever growing trait among the young workforce.
As we all know having a job with no safety net is what shocks us into the real world. From having co-workers we don’t always agree with. Having a boss or even sometimes you being the person in charge.
We are giving the kids a chance to build real world work ethics early on at our dealership, so they can become a stronger person later on in college and in the US work force.
Goodwill takes all the applications from hundreds of teenagers and chooses a handful of youthful applicants. Goodwill then proceeds to assign them to companies who they selected partnerships with, Findlay Auto Group being one of them. They work part time here and help build their resume while getting a check.
Another thing Findlay Toyota does is employee NAU athletic students during the summer. We take NAU college students and give them a chance to earn extra money with an ever growing tuition increase. We support NAU not just with donations, our support by showing up to games but also by helping the student themselves. This summer we have students from the football program and the basketball program.
We get a chance to see the youth evolve and rise to the responsibilities that are put in place here at the dealership. I believe it’s important we keep a smart workforce and instill great work ethics early on. They are the future of our great nation and we will help them to better themselves.
Thank You Lowell Observatory
When Percival Lowell founded the Lowell Observatory back in 1894. Percival didn’t realize what actions he set in motion.
Percival Lowell was a man who traveled all over the western United States looking for an ideal location to study the red planets canals. Lowell wanted a high elevation location away from city lights. When Lowell arrived in Flagstaff it was a lumber town, no electricity with a railroad that could transport his large telescope parts.
Lowell found his perfect spot to study Mars and would start a catalyst for the finding of “Planet X”. ON February 18, 1930 Tombaugh discovered the tiny and distant planet called Pluto today.
Lowell Observatory has received national attention following being marked as a historical landmark from the National Forest Service. Being named in the top 100 most important places from Time magazine and enriching the history of Flagstaff, AZ.
Lowell Observatory has had many success from the mapping of Mars, discovering Pluto, mapping the moon’s surface.
In the 1960s, a team of scientists and artists used the Clark Telescope to create detailed maps of the moon in support of America’s manned voyages to the moon. Apollo astronauts studied these maps and some even used the Clark Telescope for part of their training to go to the moon.
Now in 2015 Lowell Observatory is still educating young minds and capturing the imaginations of kids. Lowell Observatory has their 4th LOCKs (Lowell Observatory Camp for Kids) for Elementary aged kids. Lowell also has a LOCKs camp for middle aged kids as well with hands on experience learning. They will learn how to identify constellations, how to locate deep-sky objects and how to operate portable telescopes. Other activities will include hiking, drawing, playing games, and more.
Lowell Observatory also has been reaching out the Navajo-Hopi Reservations with the Navajo-Hopi Outreach program. They go out to the reservations to help them better understand our universe. They teach them similar items to the LOCKs program.
We want to thank Lowells Observatory for all it has given Flagstaff. We want to thank them for teaching our local community’s children about space and beyond. We want to thank the employees, the astronomers, the volunteers and the coordinators at Lowell Observatory for their endless dedication of doing what they love.
We are proud to sponsor you and proud to call you family of the Flagstaff community.

More than just an oil change

When you come to Findlay it’s not just an oil change. We don’t just drop the drain plug, change your oil filter and put in new oil.
When our techs first pull the vehicles into the service bay. They check your horn, windshield wipers, washer fluid, hazard warning lights/ turn signals, and brake lights.
When they pull the vehicle onto the service rack they check the fluids from coolant, brake reservoir, look for cracks in your belt, check your cabin air filter and also the engine air filter. They look at your battery for any corrosion and the health of your battery.
After your vehicle is in the air they look at your brake pads and check for any irregularity in tire wear. It’s also when they take time to check your tire pressure and rotate your tires if needed. They also look at your tire tread depth to make sure your tires won’t slide in the rain or snow.
While they wait for the oil to finish draining they do a multi check on the undercarriage of your vehicle to see if your shocks are in good condition. They look for any fluid leaks from the engine or the engine compartment. Like oil leakage, fuel line leakage, CV boot health and driveshaft condition.
After they secure your drain plug and put new oil in your vehicle it’s time to label the service sticker and send it to the car wash if the weather is in good condition.
So you are getting more than just an oil change. You know that we looked over your entire vehicle every 5k with our certified technicians.

Tire light coming on?
How the TPS (Tire Pressure System) is affected.
The tire pressure system is most affected by two anomalies. The first one is temperature and the second one is atmospheric pressure from elevation change or change in low and high pressure.
Your tires support the weight of your vehicle, right? Well they don’t! It’s the air pressure inside them that actually supports the weight. Maintaining sufficient air pressure is required if your tires are to provide all of the handling, traction and durability of which they are capable.
Since air is a gas, it expands when heated and contracts when cooled. Since Flagstaff has been having cold days lately it will be affecting your tire pressure more with the fluctuation in the temperature.
For every drop in 10 degrees will affect your tire pressure by one PSI. Also having your car sit in the afternoon sun can artificially raise your tire pressure. Having air instead of Nitrogen will also affect how the temperature fluctuation reacts. If the temperature drops 30 degrees overnight like Flagstaff can happen, then it can set off your tire light in the morning.
The elevation difference from sea level to Flagstaff’s 7,000 elevation will also affect the tire pressure. However, as altitude increases, atmospheric pressure decreases. For example, atmospheric pressure pushes against the earth at 14.7 pounds per square inch (1 kilogram per square centimeter) at sea level, yet drops to only 10.1 pounds per square inch at 10,000 feet as indicated in the following chart.
At sea level the atmospheric is 14.7 lbs per square inch of atmospheric pressure while here in Flagstaff at 7,000. The atmospheric pressure is at 11.3 lbs per square inch of atmospheric pressure. So dropping in temperature and rise in elevation might cause no difference because I guess we can say they would cancel each other out. As soon as the temperature drops at night then it will drop the PSI.
With Toyota’s TPS system the tire light will go off in one of many scenarios. One is if a 25% drop or rise in a tire pressure is off from the other 4 tires including the spare. The reason this is in place is because, lets say you run over a foreign object and it becomes lodged in your tire. The one tire will start to lose PSI over time and the tire loses 12 PSI. The other tires are at 32 PSI and the one with a nail is in goes to 20 PSI, then a tire light will come on when you turn on your vehicle in the morning.
These are a few things that can affect your tire light. So if you have a tire light on it can be as simple as a low spare tire or it can be low PSI in all your tires.
The beginning of the start
When Pete and Mary Jo Findlay decided to leave their home in a Nevada Farming Community of Panaca and move to Las Vegas to open a car dealership. They undoubtedly had no idea of the path they were about to blaze.
With three children in tow that included sons, Cliff, Ed and daughter Karen. The family stormed into the small community of Las Vegas when the population at the time was only about 75,000 residents.
Now, more than 50 years later, Findlay Automotive Group has grown into one of the largest privately owned companies in Nevada. In spite of the worst recession in the state’s history. To date the company has 35 dealerships in Arizona, Nevada, Oregon, Utah and Idaho representing 24 vehicle franchises.
Pete Findlay opened his first dealership, Pete’s Used Cars. The family became a major dealer in the Las Vegas Valley when they were awarded the Oldsmobile franchise in 1961. It was later relocated to 3024 E. Fremont St. which n houses Findlay Auto Body.
Originally our CEO Cliff Findlay, seen here with Muhammad Ali, didn’t want to move from Panaca. Where he was already an athletic star in various sports at the age of 12 in a city of 300.
Cliff Findlay is a fifth generation Nevadan. His grandfather owned farms and ranches. An uncle shoveled iron ore in the sticks of the Battleground State. Pete (Cliff’s father) bought a gas station. Turned the garage into a repair shop. Turned the repair shop into a used car lot. Pete’s Used Cars was born. That simple gas station has blossomed into over 2 dozen dealerships in four states.
When Toyota First Came to America
We have been part of life in America for over 50 years. While we’re all about making great cars and trucks, our story is bigger than our vehicles.
We first came to the U.S. in 1957, when we opened a dealership in Hollywood, California. That year just 287 customers purchased the “Toyopet Crown,” our first vehicle sold here. More than a half century later, our story in America includes ten plants across the U.S. that produce over a million and a quarter vehicles a year. It’s a story of 39,000 jobs and charitable commitments totaling over $700 million to support safety, education and the environment in America.
Our story also extends to things you probably never guessed, like rebuilding the visitor center at Yellowstone National Park or earning more patents in a single year than any other automaker. Or Apple. Or Google. It’s about sharing our manufacturing and managerial know-how with nonprofits and community partners across the country so they can help more people, more quickly – such as the St. Bernard Project in New Orleans, which is rebuilding homes after Hurricane Katrina, and Food Bank for New York City.
We know that what you drive is personal. It’s fitting then that our story is also about a team of people who put their skills and dedication to work each day for the good of our families, our communities and the roads we share.
This is just the story of when Toyota came to America. Next we will talk about when Findlay first started.
