Climb to Conquer Cancer in Flagstaff is happening this weekend. Findlay Toyota is proud to sponsor the Climb to Conquer Cancer in Flagstaff, hosted by the American Cancer Society. "Every human being has a basic instinct to help each other out. If a hiker gets lost out int he mountains, people will coordinate a search. If an earthquake levels a city, people all over the world send emergency supplies. This instinct is found in every culture, without exception." - The Martian Climb to Conquer Cancer represents the hope that those lost to cancer will never be forgotten, that those who face cancer will be supported, and that one day cancer will be eliminated. Climb to Conquer Cancer is a one day event, where teams people participate in a hike through beautiful mountain scenery, and take part in the festival area. Each team of 12 or more participants has the opportunity to submit their own artwork for the back of their t-shirts, and to participate in fundraising for the event. Our festival features entertainment, food, and a special celebration of cancer survivors. Because Climb to Conquer Cancer is a non-competitive event, anyone and everyone can participate. Teams form from businesses, clubs, families, friends, hospitals, churches, schools and service organizations. These individuals all share a common purpose - their support of the American Cancer Society’s Mission. This year's event takes place at Arizona Snowbowl. Findlay Toyota is a proud sponsor of the Pepsi Amphitheater, who presents Michael Franti and the Spearhead. Here is one of his songs. "Life is Better With You." Michael Franti was born in Oakland, California. His mother had Irish, German, and French ancestry, and his father, Thomas Hopkins, was of African-American and Native American descent. However, his mother made an adoption plan for him because she was afraid her family would not accept him. He was adopted by Carole Wisti and Charles Franti, a Finnish-American couple in Oakland, who at the time had three biological children and one adopted African American son. Charles Franti was a professor in the department of epidemiology and preventive medicine of the UC Davis School of Veterinary Medicine and died in 2003. Michael's four siblings are named Rebecca, Sara, Dan, and Matthew. Michael spent his grade 9 school year at Highland Junior High School in Edmonton, Alberta. He then attended Davis Senior High School and graduated from the University of San Francisco. During his time at school there he met a priest who taught him how to tell a story on paper, and soon he was writing poetry. He purchased a bass at a pawn shop and started creating music inspired by hip hop, punk, and reggae that was being played on the campus radio station. When you first came to flagstaff what did you feel? Did you first notice the mild summers with a light breeze? Did you travel up here for snowboarding? Maybe you came into Flagstaff and was overwhelmed by the positive atmosphere of the people in our community. I come from a larger city in Utah and I never felt a sense of community like I do from Flagstaff. When I first came to Flagstaff, the nice weather was a great indication. The day I felt a sense of community was when I attended my first Flagstaff symphony orchestra. I went to my first concert and fell in love with the town. I didn't just fall in love with the Historical Downtown District of Flagstaff, or the community, or the great weather or the trees lining our town. It was a combination of everything from the Lowell Observatory where I can learn more about whats beyond the borders of our planet. The help of NAU and CCC where I'm furthering my knowledge and education so I can help millions of people later on in life. We have this special place we all call home. That's the beauty of the human race. We have this amazing ability to take any place on earth and make it our home. Then I started to learn how many Non-profits and charity foundations there were in Flagstaff. I was amazed at how well Flagstaff citizens look out for one another. We didn't just look out for each other but we had this mutual respect for one another. The many faces I came across were friendly, sincere, honest and loved this town. I was lucky enough to work for Findlay who loves to support these Non Profits. The Findlay Auto Group let me join their family and have supported me while I put myself through college to become a Judge. When we take care of our town, our town takes care of us.
